Time Warner

2 October 2008

Time Warner Cable (TWC) is a US-based company providing cable TV, High-speed Internet and Video on Demand (VOD) services mainly in the Southern, Eastern and South Eastern parts of the US. Time Warner Cable was formed in 1989 through the merger of America Television and Communications and Warner Cable. It is now a division of AOL Time Warner. By March 2008, TWC had over 3 million VoIP customers.

On 21 May 2008, TWC and Time Warner announced their legal and structural separation as two independent publicly traded companies. The agreement to separate is a strategic move by the company, giving financial and operational flexibility to each company. After this official separation, on 10 July 2008, the operator sold off a part of its cable systems to Windjammer Communications. The sale is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2008 and would erode nearly 80,000 basic video subscribers and 120,000 revenue generating units from TWC.

Time Warner Cable offers its services through Internet Service Providers (ISPs) like Road Runner, AOL, and EarthLink etc. It offers Voice over IP to its broadband customers as a bundled service and also as a stand-alone service. TWC’s IP telephony uses a softswitch server for delivering VoIP services over its network.
